A Promising, Fishy Painkiller

Friday, December 07, 2007

Back in 2003, a captivating article at Wired.com about a small Vancouver-based Pharmaceutical company called Wex Technologies Inc. who are looking to produce a potent painkiller derived from the blowfish called Tectin.

From the article:
"The company says Tectin differs from other painkillers in that it doesn't have the same side effects as morphine and its derivatives, doesn't interact with other medicines and is not addictive. It is up to 3,200 times stronger than morphine."

In August of 2007, Wex Technologies published a study entitled "An Open-Label, Multi-Dose Efficacy and Safety Study of Intramuscular Tetrodotoxin in Patients with Severe Cancer-Related Pain." The report is in both Pdf and html.

I just noticed that according to the company Tectin™ has been cleared for a severe non-malignant chronic pain trial in Canada. Maybe this could help individuals like myself who have not responded well to the usually regiment used to treat clusters. Not to mention anyone else who live in a constant of agony. It would sure would be nice to have an effective painkiller. Here's looking at hoping!

Note: I am not affiliated with any of the afore companies or product(s) mentioned.

Medical terminology can cause confusion at the best of times. If there is a word you do not understand all you have to do is double-click on it and the definition will appear! Don't forget to drop me a line by email at versilleus@gmail.com with your comments, questions‚ recommended resources‚ concerns‚ & especially your experiences with clusters. Or come find me on my Facebook Profile to add me as a Friend. Whether you are a supporter‚ care-giver or sufferer. I would love to hear from you!

*Please do not use this information for self diagnoses. Writing about my experiences with chronic cluster headaches & epilepsy is a good outlet for me. Consult your Dr. with any kind of headache or chronic pain you may have. The 3rd party links on my site I have found to be a good resource to me over the past few years & dearly hope they will benefit you as well.*
